Some Lenten questions (conclusion)
Holy Week is also a week that, for many of us, also officially ushers in the
Spring season - a time of renewal and joy. The weather promises to give us
its spring best for much of this week, as we conclude our series of Lenten
questions.
Why is it called Good Friday when it was anything but good?
Our English language has distilled many words over the centuries.
For example, the word "goodbye" is a shortening of the phrase used years
ago, "may God be with ye". Many theorize this day was called God's Friday
or Holy Friday and it has since come down to us as Good Friday. A service
of darkness (or "tenebrae" ) on this day recalls Jesus' suffering.
(Note: This year in our chapel on Good Friday, April 2nd at 2:00 PM,
Pastor Tim will lead an ecumenical service, featuring a dramatic monologue
of Jesus' last day on earth presented by our resident Charles Pennington.)
May Lent be a season of preparation for Easter for you.. a time to
ready ourselves for the humble thankfulness and sheer joy of Easter morning!
Have a blessed Easter!!!!
